Selecting Books Selecting Books

Visit your local library often. Attend story times; ask librarians - especially children's librarians -- for book suggestions for you and your child. By using the library, you can keep a supply of high-quality, interesting books at home without spending money.

Check online resources for book suggestions. Start with the Read It Loud! Favorites.

Visit local bookstores. Check their displays of new and appealing books and books of local interest.

If your child is an infant or toddler, select age-appropriate books that you like. Your enthusiasm will help hold your child's attention and will help the two of you enjoy the sheer pleasure of reading.

For toddlers, try board books that your child can explore on his/her own as you read the book aloud.

For preschoolers and older children, ask your child to help you select books to read aloud. Be sure to praise your child for his/her choices.

Use books to explore topics that interest your child. For example, if your child likes the beach, select a range of fiction and non-fiction books to bring the subject to life - from Curious George Goes to the Beach and Flotsam, to shell collecting guides and encyclopedias of marine mammals.
