Children's Book CouncilThe Children's Book Council

The Children’s Book Council, established in 1945, is the non-profit trade association of publishers of books for children and young adults in the United States. The CBC’s 90 members are America’s premier publishers of children’s books. The CBC is the official sponsor, together with the CBC Foundation, of Children’s Book Week, the longest-running literacy event in the country. The CBC, together with the CBC Foundation and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress created and administers the program featuring the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. The goal of the Children’s Book Council is to make the reading and enjoyment of books for young people an essential part of America’s educational and social goals, as well as to enhance the public perception of the importance of reading. The CBC Foundation, Every Child a Reader, a 501(c)(3) entity, seeks to harness the collective power of the children’s book publishing industry to create a positive social impact in the nation’s communities, focusing primarily on literacy and the enjoyment of reading.

Foundation will be teaming up with the First Book Marketplace the world’s largest online bookstore offering deeply discounted books to community programs serving children from low income families. The First Book Marketplace offers a wide variety of Newbery and Caldecott award winning titles, Spanish and bilingual offerings, and best-selling read-aloud titles for children of all ages, all at 50-90% off retail prices. First Book also brings the country’s largest database of programs serving children from low-income families, offering reach directly to more than 20,000 Title I schools, Head Start centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, after school programs, soup kitchens, clinic, shelters, and wide variety of other initiatives serving our country’s hardest to reach children.

Making donated funds go farther than ever before. Thanks to First Book’s tremendous reach and strong publishing partnerships, an individual donating just $2.00 will provide a new book to a child in need. Similarly, a corporate or foundation gift of $2,000 would provide more than 1,000 books (with a retail value of more than $7,000) directly to the children needing them most.
